Later in the afternoon, cars showed up at Fitger's On The Lake, a former brewery that has been converted into a shopping and hotel complex. Thousands of car fans, many up from the Minneapolis/St. Paul area for an early start to the holiday weekend, flooded the parking ramp overlooking Lake Superior.

All three local TV stations did live reports from the scene for their 6 o'clock news programs. Duluth Mayor Gary Doty presented CRA's Philip Young with a proclamation, declaring June 30th as "Around the World Motor Challenge Day" in the city. A Dinner With The Drivers featured a menu specially created to highlight the foods native to the area, and was served in the Fitger's courtyard overlooking Gitchee Gumee on a warm summer evening.

Drivers, workers and guests enjoyed a "Minnesota" dinner overlooking Lake Superior.

Some competitors looked for other diversions while in Duluth. Thomas Noor was able to get in a round of golf at the Northland Country Club. Mark Rinkel skipped the dinner chosing instead to take in a baseball game between the Duluth-Superior Dukes and the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks. The Dukes lost.
The dinner ended early enough that drivers would be able to turn in early for a good night's sleep. That is, unless you're Irish....
