1977 Saab 99 EMS/Turbo

VIN: 99771031323
Engine No: SI02 P02 - 00021
Gearbox No: S500120
Test Car No: 993 (numbered 900 thru 999)

In early 1977, Saab built 100 99 models with a turbocharged engine for evaluation purposes. All were in EMS trim, in both 2-door and 3-door body styles. Of the 100 "pre-production Test Cars" as they are now known, 37 were sent to the United States and placed in the hands of company execs, magazine writers, and loyal Saab customers known to drive a lot of miles in a short time.

Only four of those 37 pre-production 99 Turbos are known to exist today. One has been restored, one has been partially restored, one is running but needs attention, and one is in very rough condition. This is the latter.

Test Car number 993 was assigned to Car and Driver magazine in June of 1977, and was the subject of their road test in the October 1977 issue. It is a 3-door version without a sunroof, and originally came with the EMS soccerball wheels and not the Inca wheels that were OE on the 1978 99 Turbo model.

After the evaluation program, Test Car 993 was purchased by an employee of Saab in the Chicago region. He drove it for many miles; the odometer now reads 82,xxx and has likely gone around at least once. Typical of any car that has spent its life in the Midwest, it is quite rusty. There is rust on the rear quarter panels, on the doors, on the front fenders, and on the cowling just below the windshield. The interior is very worn as well, with torn covers.

"Basket case" is a good description, as nearly all systems will need repair or replacement. My intent in restoration was to find a non-rusty 99 EMS chassis and transplant the rebuilt turbo engine and transmission into it.

Bumpers and many replacement parts collected for this car are in the trunk/hatch. A set of four EMS Soccerball wheels will be included. Two rusty 1978 99 Turbos are part of the package also.

In addition to the car, I have copies of the 1977 and 1978 99 Turbo supplements to the Saab 99 factory shop manual, and most of the technical bulletins regarding update kits.

I do not have the title for this car, but may be able to get one through the ex-Saab employee, as I believe he was the last registered owner.

This rare Saab is located in northern Minnesota, not far from Duluth. Transportation may be arranged for a fee.
