29 Jan 2001 Rally Rhybudd MGB-GT First to compete in SCCA Historic Class

Rally Rhybudd MGB-GT at Sno and Drift ClubRallies. An MGB-GT is hardly the first choice you would make for a rally on icy roads in Michigan. That didn't deter Phil and Dallas Smith who took their 1968 GT to a Historic class win (the only starter, but they finished) in the Sno and Drift ClubRallies.

They will go into the SCCA records as the first car/team to compete in the Historic ClubRally class. In addition, they are listed as finishing 2nd in the Group 2 category (2WD, engine size under 2.4-liters) in each of the ClubRallies associated with the SnoDrift ProRally.

A look at the final results for the Classic Rally Association's 12th Winter Challenge shows that the Saab 96 of American's Kevin Clemens and Peter Pleitner were among those not classified as finishers. Rally teams experienced the worst winter weather ever for the 12 years this traditional Monte Carlo style rally has been run.

Clemens reports the two-stroke engine on the Saab seized on Col De Granier on the third day. He has promised a brief story on his adventures, and maybe some photos. Clemens' writings will also be found in AUTOMOBILE and european car magazines.
